Final location: Coos Bay; Final odometer: 20603; Miles so far: lots more (will update later)
The day dawned once again to the smell of Mike's coffee wafting through the house. I had slept in until almost 8 AM - where had the day gone? We settled on going into town to eat at Mom's Kitchen in North Bend (1603 Sherman Ave, North Bend, OR), a place recommended by the fellows at SCP. It was great and we got to chat with Mom herself and her son. Tomorrow is the 26th anniversary of the Kitchen opening.
Afterward, we headed back to Capt. John's but most people had already gone and done their thing. Mike wanted to do ride Seven Devils Road (just because of the name). Great idea! Off we went. We stopped at Merchant's Beach after we had gotten in behind four other VROCers.
From there we meandered through some nice roads and ended up in Bullards Beach State Park. We followed sights to the lighthouse (not knowing there was one when we entered the park) and ended up at the Coquille River Lighthouse where we were given a fascinating history of the lighthouse and area.
Hey, I can see our bikes from here.
Next, it was off to the other side of Bandon to Coquille Point and Elephant Rock. I couldn't see it, maybe erosion had set in... Here's Mike taking in the view and an odd weed-like plant that looked like cauliflower.
We then took 42S over to Coquile, 42 back to Coos Bay, a cut across town and back over to Capt. John's. A few folks were hanging out, I made an adjustment or two to the Wing. The Miller's showed up and Denise got treated to a ride on the Burgman with Sherm. The Millers then took off to Portland. I headed back to the house, mindful of the wedding at 6. A good day's local ride of about 75 miles.
On the way, I noticed a yurt-like roof poking over the fence at the Charleston Marina RV Park, so I rode in. Sure enough there were two yurts there and only on occupied. I wanted to do the whole yurt thing this year but it would have been too big for the trailer and anytime I looked to book a yurt on the coast, they were already taken.
While puttering around town, I had noticed a wooden sculpture outside an RV Park (boy there are a lot of those around here). So, I finally took the time to stop and snap a picture.
I then stopped to take a picture of this dome house on Cape Arago Highway (the road on which the Plainview sits).
The Wedding
DD (Dave Waug #5654) and Pebbles (Romy Esplin #20508) hono(u)red us by allowing their fellow VROCers to be present as they exchanged vows at the point on Cape Arago. There were about 50 people there, enjoying the ceremony. Here are some pictures, I'm Sherm (the de facto photographer, got more and better ones):
From there, a few of us were going to dinner at the High Tide Cafe (91124 Cape Arago Hwy, Charleston, OR) but first we stopped at one of the viewpoints to look at the seals on the rocks. Then it was back to the beach house for some cake, visiting and good-byes.
Another VROC gathering is done. Now begins the second half of my journey.
